What do you suck at?
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas Edison
I recently read an article on Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx, and her path to success. She became the youngest self-made woman billionaire in the world when she was still in her 20s. However, when interviewed by Fortune, she didn’t mention anything about her actual success, accomplishments, or goals she had achieved. She credits her success to a simple question her father asked her every week: “what did you fail at this week?” He wanted to not only know her failures, but celebrated them to help her turn them into a success.
Think about that. When was the last time you really sat down to focus on what you failed at? Typically, we are celebrated for the success we’ve had – not our short-comings. If you could spend more time trying to turn your failures into a success, what else do you think you could achieve? Many well-known entrepreneurs have reported how important failure, persistence, and risks were in shaping their career path.
So, what that being said, this week I challenge you to find something you suck at. Whether it’s something small or large, spend a little time trying to improve on whatever it is. Once you’ve turned that ‘failure’ into a success go find something else you’re not great at. It is okay to fail. Fail over and over again. Failure is only temporary as long as you put in the effort to turn it into an achievement.
