Monday Motivation: What do you do for a living?

Monday Motivation: What do you do for a living?

Monday Motivation, 1.29.18

Written by: Kaitlyn Gwaltney

Every Monday, The Rogers-Long Team meets for one of its two weekly meetings. The Monday meeting always ends with “Monday Motivation” in which a few minutes are spent listening to one team member presenting a quote, a quick reading from a book, a scene from a movie, or anything else they find motivating to provide a “spark” to the whole team on a Monday morning.

What do you do for a living?

How do you answer this question?

A person’s first instinct when asked this question is to tell others WHAT they do; however, have you ever thought about beginning your statement with WHY you do WHAT you do?

‘The Golden Circle’ diagram below shows three parts: What, How, and Why. Every organization knows what they do, what they sell, and what their services are. Some organizations know how they do it and what sets them apart from their competition. But only a few organizations truly know WHY they do what they do.

We all have a 30 second elevator pitch that is a very short and sweet blurb of what we do. For example, as a Realtor, mine goes something similar to this: “I help people buy and sell houses in the Central VA area with specific systems that our team has in place to make the whole process stress-free and exciting”. To be honest, most people probably stopped listening around the specific systems we have in place. There are over 5,000+ other Realtors in Central, VA who do the same thing, so why choose me? What if I started with WHY I am in real estate? If my pitch was “I believe moving from one home to another should be a stress-free process which is why we have specific systems in place to help you buy or sell a home in Central, VA” most people would be intrigued to hear what you truly believe in. It is different, not an answer they are expecting, and gives them a chance to relate to you without being in the same profession.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”

So, what do you do for a living?

The RLT excitedly brought Kaitlyn on to work with buyers and sellers due to her humility, inner drive to succeed, and her fun-loving attitude. Kaitlyn has found a lot of early success in her career on The Rogers-Long Team, and even sold her own personal home and bought a new one with her husband this past year!
