Monday Motivation: There’s no growth in the comfort zone

Monday Motivation: There’s no growth in the comfort zone

Monday Motivation, 4.23.18

Written by: Ben Rogers

Every Monday, The Rogers-Long Team meets for one of its two weekly meetings. The Monday meeting always ends with “Monday Motivation” in which a few minutes are spent listening to one team member presenting a quote, a quick reading from a book, a scene from a movie, or anything else they find motivating to provide a “spark” to the whole team on a Monday morning.

Get out a piece of pen and paper. Draw a line down the middle. On the left hand side, title it “The Comfort Zone” and on the right hand side, title it “The Stress Zone”. Now spend a few minutes and write down anything that comes to mind that is “comfortable” on the left side and anything that is “stressful” on the right side. GO!

Now that you’ve completed the activity, take a look at what you wrote down that are “comfortable”. Here are some of the things I wrote down: sleeping in, watching TV, browsing Facebook & Instagram, attending a party. As it pertains to business, I wrote things down like: making a congratulatory phone call after a loan has been approved, attending a first-time buyer’s closing, sending emails.

After you read through your “comfortable” activities, take a look at what you wrote down that are “stressful”. I wrote down: getting up early, going to the gym more days than I don’t, eating healthy, disagreeing on something with my fiancé. As it pertains to business, I wrote down things like: inspection issues, delivering bad news, preparing for an appointment that you already know is a long shot to get the job.

Leif Babin is a former Navy SEAL officer and co-wrote “Extreme Ownership” with his SEAL teammate, friend, and business partner Jocko Willink. Babin says that “There’s no growth in the comfort zone…you gotta create some stress.”

Take one more look through the things you wrote down that are “comfortable”. Is there any room for growth there…or just more comfort?

Compare that to the things you wrote down that are “stressful”. I’m willing to be there are growth opportunities everywhere. My list for one, is littered with growth opportunities. Stressful to get up early? Great, more time in the day to accomplish my goals. Going to the gym more days that I don’t and eating healthy? Awesome, I feel better about myself and gain some confidence. Disagreement with my fiancé? It’s hard, and it’s not fun…but out of it will come a solution that will enable us to have a stronger relationship. Inspection issues on a big real estate transaction? What if the deal falls through? At least I learned something I didn’t before and it can only get better. Have to deliver bad news? Get it over with and make the call immediately so I’m that much closer to the next opportunity. Preparing for an appointment that’s a long shot? At least I’ve given myself an opportunity and if I don’t get the job, I learned how to practice for the next one.

I think you get the point.

So let this question linger as you get your Monday going: where are your opportunities to grow through stress? Are you living in the comfort zone, or are you growing through the stress?

Remember, growth happens daily…not in a day.
