Monday Motivation: Be Kind. Just Do It.

Monday Motivation, 8.13.18

Every Monday, The Rogers-Long Team meets for one of its two weekly meetings. The Monday meeting always ends with “Monday Motivation” in which a few minutes are spent listening to one team member presenting a quote, a quick reading from a book, a scene from a movie, or anything else they find motivating to provide a “spark” to the whole team on a Monday morning.
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind, always.”
– Ian Maclaren
It’s simple. We are taught to be kind from the time we are young. The “golden rule” of treating others how you’d like to be treated. Being kind is something that doesn’t cost anything, doesn’t take a specific degree/certificate for, and doesn’t require any commonalities with another person. In my opinion, being kind to someone is the easiest way to even get the chance to find commonalities with them.
If everyone wore a sign explaining what they were going through, would it make you kinder to them? One example that comes to mind is seeing a “Student Driver” sign on the car in front of you. I don’t know about you, but I typically slow down or go around to give them a little extra space since they are learning. But we shouldn’t need that sign. You hear it all the time, “their family member passed away”, “they are going through a divorce”, or “they had a bad weekend”. Those explanations immediately cause you to go out of your way to be nice to someone.
We shouldn’t have to know what those around us are going through in order to be kind to them. Just do it anyway. Why not be the reason someone else smiles today?
