Monday Motivation: GENEROSITY

Monday Motivation, 11.12.18

Every Monday, The Rogers-Long Team meets for one of its two weekly meetings. The Monday meeting always ends with “Monday Motivation” in which a few minutes are spent listening to one team member presenting a quote, a quick reading from a book, a scene from a movie, or anything else they find motivating to provide a “spark” to the whole team on a Monday morning.
Generosity. What can we do for others? How does doing good for others, change who we are and how we approach each day and life in general? People are drawn to those who do good. It is more than simple acts, here and there. It is a mindset. I want to be selfless, not selfish. We have to be able to do good and not expect to receive anything in return. And it is not all about giving to others, but also what giving to others, does for us. It changes our brains. We smile more. Making others happy makes us happy. We approach the day differently. Be generous and do good each day. It compounds.
Being generous is not limited to giving money. We can give our time, our encouragement, our presence. Doing something you don’t HAVE to do, for someone else, leaves a lasting impact. There is no better example of this than my mother. Every year during the holidays, we sit down as a family and sign cards to be sent out. These are not Christmas cards, per say. Most are to people, I do not know or have never met. I have been signing these as long as I can remember. Whenever someone passes away, my mother jots it down on the calendar. She sends out a card titled “Christmas in Heaven” with signatures from all six of us. These are sent out to the family, or close friends, who will be experiencing their first Christmas without their loved one. I cannot tell you the amount of times, someone finds out that I am the son of Denise Long and I hear about how touched they were, when they received the card in the mail. It is surreal how many people she has had an impact on and how the card, and my mother, are not forgotten.
How can we impact someone’s life today? I’m sure, at some point, you have heard the phrase, “treat the janitor with the same respect as you would treat the CEO”. Treating people with respect is becoming rarer and rarer. That is why simple acts go so much further in today’s world. We spend so much time thinking about ourselves. It is a me, me, me, world out there today. Let’s see what happen when we take a step towards becoming more selfless, not selfish.
