Monday Motivation: Luck, Preparation, Opportunity

Monday Motivation: Luck, Preparation, Opportunity

Monday Motivation, 11.18.19

Every Monday, The Rogers-Long Team meets for one of its two weekly meetings. The Monday meeting always ends with “Monday Motivation” in which a few minutes are spent listening to one team member presenting a quote, a quick reading from a book, a scene from a movie, or anything else they find motivating to provide a “spark” to the whole team on a Monday morning.

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

This quote originated from the Roman Philosopher, Seneca, however has been used by various other celebrities and CEO’s throughout the years. I think what really grabbed me from this quote was the ending of the quote, preparation meets opportunity. While yes, I do think there are some things in life that one could consider getting lucky, however, for the most part I don’t truly believe in luck. Luck to me is something that people throw around when watching other people have success. I do not think it’s lucky when someone gets a raise. I don’t think it’s luck when a sports team wins the championship. And I do not think it’s luck when a student gets straight A’s for the year. That is very easily described as preparation. These folks have all done their research in order to become the best at what they do. It follows along with the quote ‘practice makes perfect’. If you practice something over and over again, you will naturally be prepared when the opportunity arises for you to complete the task. It becomes second nature.

What is an opportunity that you have been waiting for? Think big. If you could have anything, what would it be? Now take that opportunity and work backwards. What would it take for you to achieve it? I’ll leave you with a challenge: start working on that preparation today. You never know when you will get the opportunity, so make sure you are prepared for when it comes your way.
