Every Monday, The Rogers-Long Team meets for one of its two weekly meetings. The Monday meeting always ends with “Monday Motivation” in which a few minutes are spent listening to one team member presenting a quote, a quick reading from a book, a scene from a movie, or anything else they find motivating to provide a “spark” to the whole team on a Monday morning.
There are almost 8 billion people in the world. Each person is their own unique individual with their own thoughts and feelings. We come from different backgrounds and heritages and no two of us are the same…except for one thing. We all have mothers. We all have someone who brought us into this world, fed us, cared for us and taught us how to love and how to sacrifice. There are long nights and even longer days but their love knows no bounds. Mothers are resilient. There is no clocking in and clocking out. When they are tired, they persevere. It’s a grind with the greatest reward.
During question and answer portion the 2007 Mr. Hanover High School competition I was asked, “What women in your life do you look up to?” My response was, “the tall ones”. I dropped the mic, the crowd roared and I walked off stage. It was a great laugh but boy was I wrong. Like you, I have the greatest mom around. I was blessed to grow up with a kind, loving women who taught me more than I ever could imagine about life. She taught me the power of a personal note. Showed me how just showing up, can mean so much to people. How to treat people with respect and empathy. Our teams core values of attitude is everything, presence is my greatest attribute and relationships are more important than transactions, have been instilled in me long before the Rogers Long Team was started. I cant thank my mother enough for all that she has done and continues to do for me…except cook. Never really mastered that one.
Since I am a recent father, it has been incredible to watch my wife Hannah become a mother. I see the struggle. I see the bond. I see the frustration. But most of all I see the love. I see a woman who is always learning and sacrificing. Someone who is growing, adapting, improvising and problem solving. Teddy is 6 month old today. It feels like it has been two weeks and two years all at the same time. Last night at bedtime I tried to hide behind the book Love You Forever as I turned the pages and listened to Hannah read to our boy. She was rocking Teddy back and forth and back and forth and my misty eyes peeked from behind the book to see Teddy staring straight up at momma. I couldn’t help but think of impactful she is going to be in his life and how their love for each other will continue to grow.
Each and every one of us are products of strong women. We learned first, from them. It is because of mothers that we know how to show up everyday and get things done. They find a way to figure things out and provide all that we need. Love, care, consistent, determined and dedicated are just a few words that describe mothers and attributes we can all look up to.
